James May Crashed TWICE During Upcoming Grand Tour Norway Special: “A Proper Battering”

In an exclusive interview with Grand Tour Nation and other press, James May talked about the fact he crashed twice during the upcoming episode of The Grand Tour. The next episode, set in Norway, follows Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May as they drive across the country in three rally-inspired cars, but it wasn’t as plain sailing for the Our Man In Italy presenter as he expected it to be.

Not only was he sent to hospital for brain and spine scans after hitting a wall at serious speed after a dash down an underground tunnel, he later crashed through the ice in the same Mitsubishi Evo 8 where the poor car almost drowned.

We talked to James about this, asking if he feels unlucky that he and his car went through so much:

“Well, that could have happened to any one of us,” he admitted.

“Whoever was in front at that point was going to go through that thin bit. That’s just unlucky. It makes the car more heroic.”

He continued, discussing his love for the Evo which “refuses to die”:

“The thing I like about that film is that that yellow car just refuses to die. It’s given a proper battering. It is what rally cars were supposed to do.

“They crashed all the time, but they had to keep going –it’s part of the rules, so they were hammered back into shape, which is what I did with mine. I just did a more thorough test.”

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
