The Secret Behind The Grand Tour Theme Song

The Grand Tour is a British motoring television series that has gained a huge following since its debut in 2016. One of the standout features of the show, like its predecessor Top Gear, is its iconic theme song, which has become instantly recognizable to fans all over the world. But have you ever wondered about the story behind the song? Who composed it, and what was the inspiration behind it? In this article, we’ll explore the secrets behind the Grand Tour theme song, from its creation to its hidden history and reception among fans and critics alike. Get ready to dive into the world of automotive-themed music and discover the magic behind this unforgettable tune.

The Grand Tour Theme Song

The Grand Tour theme song plays at both he beginning and end of the Prime Video car show. We’d put it in the genre of classic rock blues with the main melody coming from an electric guitar with a number of effects on it such as fuzz distortion. Partnering with this is a harmonica and of course the backing of a full band.

Who is the Theme Song Written By?

The song is an original piece by Amazon itself, written specifically for The Grand Tour unlike Top Gear which was a song based on Jessica by The Allman Brothers Band.

James May was asked if he had written the song, and while he didn’t write this one, he did have a go at it:

“I haven’t written the theme tune. Well, I did write one but I kept it to myself because I thought it was a bit shit, and a bit ploddy. I hadn’t quite got it right.

“But then somebody else came up with one, and some of us may be involved with the performance in some way. But we’re not talking Beethoven’s Fifth – it’s a jingle!”

The Secret Behind the Theme Song

While the song is an original by Prime Video, many fans have found a song from a 1997 album that sounds almost identical. And if you look into it, it looks like far too much of a coincidence.

The album in question is named ‘Power of Three’. Need I say more? It was recorded in 1996 by the band Fatso Jetson, and out of the 12 songs on the record, the song “Orgy Porgy” sounds very much like our favourite car show’s theme song.

It uses very much the same blues chord progression and the melody is also very similar. It even uses the same instruments, albeit in a slightly different way. Listen all the way through – I really advise you to, it’s brilliant – and you’ll pick up several cues from the theme song as well.

We believe we’ve found the secret influence behind the theme song of The Grand Tour. Do you think we’ve cracked it?

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
