Richard Hammond’s BMW 850ci From A Legendary Top Gear Challenge Is For Sale

The BMW 850Ci which Grand Tour host Richard Hammond presented on the seventeenth season of Top Gear, is now for sale.

Hammond chose the iconic retro BMW as a good second-hand car for the same price as the then-new Nissan Pixo. The 1994 BMW 850Ci seemed an obvious choice for Hammond with the 5.0-litre V12 engine providing 322 horsepower. It had a five-speed automatic gear box that sent power to the rear wheels.

The BBC production team bought the car back in 2011 and once filming was finished, two of the producers used it as their daily driver for a couple of years. Unfortunately, after that there was an engine fault causing it to only fire on six cylinders, so it was stored close to Dunsfold.

Apart from adding some miles on the clock, nothing drastic has been altered with the car so it is still as it would come out of the factory. The car was taken to a BMW 8-series specialist, Chris Burton in Surrey, who restored it. Both fuel pumps were replaced and a new radiator was put in as the previous one had a hairline crack in it. The wheels have been refurbished with BMW centre caps, a new headlining has been fitted, and the onboard computer has had a new screen and bulbs.

The advert shows that it has a grey leather interior as well as a lot of the optional BMW equipment such as the electrically adjustable steering wheel, BMW Dynamic suspension, and the BMW CD changer. The only downsides that are specified on the listing are that the remote central locking doesn’t work so the key has to be used to lock and unlock the car, there is no service book, the boot carpet has some stains, there is a crack in the drivers mirror and the BMW torch that is kept in the glovebox doesn’t work.

The 850ci is currently up for auction and, at the time of writing, the current bid is €3,900 with four days left.
