A New DeLorean DMC-12 Could Be On Its Way

The famous car from the iconic film Back To The Future could be returning to the world as DeLorean  Motor Company tells Hagerty that they produce a limited run of DMC-12s. This is all thanks to the Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act of 2015, which allows small car companies to build 325 cars per year that don’t have to conform to modern federal safety regulations.

Unfortunately, when this plan was first revealed back in 2015 it failed thanks to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) not outlining the proposal. But thanks to SEMA combatting this in October 2019, things have changed.

This DeLorean DMC-12 Restomod Is Exactly What We All Need

With the NHTSA releasing a 120-page document outlining the laws and regulations surrounding this idea, DeLorean vice president James Espey is now readying us all for a “new” DMC-12. The restomod DeLorean we wrote about a few weeks ago would be the perfect look… just sayin’.

The car is likely to receive a modern engine, and an equally modern exterior and interior. At a price of around $100,000, one or two cars will be built a week. Of course, these are the plans anyway, and anything could change as DeLorean’s management start running the numbers behind this potential project.

As amazing as this news is, what’s even better is that this law could propel plenty of smaller car companies onto the market. Want Singer to produce their own car? Yeah, that would be cool.
