Chevrolet Confirms Corvette Is Going Electric In 2023
Chevrolet has confirmed that its most legendary sports car, the Corvette, will be going electric from 2023. GM’s president Mark Reuss spoke to Phil LeBeau on CNBC’s Squawk Box where he didn’t confirm any full details, but a teaser posted by Chevrolet after the interview outlined the plan moving forward for the popular car.
The video, posted by Chevrolet, clearly shows a hybrid version of the C8 with exhaust tips and the sound of an internal combustion engine. It also showed its front wheel spinning as well as its rear wheels, showing off its all-wheel drive. Reuss admitted in the interview that a hybrid version of the car would be coming first in 2023, followed by a full EV version after this, but the ins and outs of these powertrains are currently unknown.
We’ve seen a number of hybrid Corvettes testing around the Nurburgring, and it’s rumoured that they’ll be branded with the name E-Ray after GM trademarked the name back in 2015. It’s also rumoured that a ‘Zora’ model will top the range by combining a 5.5-litre V8 engine with an electric motor, producing up to 1,000 horsepower and 975 lb-ft (1,322 Nm) of torque.
Another model, going by the name Grand Sport, is also rumoured, reportedly being powered by a 6.2-litre V8 with a more mild-hybrid setup producing around 600 hp and 500 lb-ft (678 Nm) of torque. I must stress, these are very much rumours, so take them as you will.
We’ve been hearing rumours of electric and hybrid Corvettes for a while now, even from president Joe Biden who told us that GM is working on a 200mph-capable model. And while GM has confirmed it, I still feel like we’re as much in the dark as we were last week.
