Documents You Need to Know About When Purchasing a Used Car

Did you know that the cost of a used car is set to increase? That is according to the industry as the challenges of Brexit hit the economy. So the last thing you want to do if you are purchasing a used car is to buying something that is either a write-off or has been stolen. While buying used cars is more cost-effective than a new model, it can still cost a lot of money. Negotiating a good deal is part of the process of getting a bargain but it can turn into a nightmare if you are unaware of the documents you need to check as part of the car buying process. Below you will find a list of documents that you should check before handing over any cash.

Registration document/V5C/Log Book

The name given can vary but it is essentially a document that notes who the car is registered to. On the document, you need to check if there is a DVL watermark to check for authenticity. Another tip is to check the serial number on the document relates to the serial number on the car. Another number to check is the Vehicle Identification Number (otherwise known as the VIN), again these need to match up. A “real” seller won’t mind you checking all these details, while it might take a little more of your time, it is certainly worth it in the end.

MOT certificate

Buying used cars also means ensuring it is road-worthy. Each car that is 3 years and older will need an MOT certificate. Every car over three years old must pass an MOT and have a valid test certificate. Ensure that the certificate you receive has an expiry date in the future depending on how it has been advertised. Having an MOT certificate will tell you that the car is road-worthy. You will need to ensure that any issues with the car in the future are sorted to ensure your car passes the MOT inspection.

Service History

While not essential, being provided with a full-service history of a used car is a sign that it has been well looked after. The service history can include work that has been carried out and will include the stamp/signature of the garage that conducted the work.

Avoiding Mistakes

The above is just some of the ways to avoid making costly mistakes when purchasing a used car. Another tip is to be aware of car cloning. Car cloning is a bit like when something steals your identity. They are stealing the identity of your car. It can involve falsifying documents or changing number plates and VIN numbers on the car. Undertaking the checks noted above will go away to combating anyone trying to defraud you. If in doubt you can check to conduct a vehicle history check to ensure you aren’t buying a dodgy car.
