How Much Does It Cost To Put A Ferrari Engine In A GT86?

Like I said in my last article about this car, the 86 chassis is no stranger to an engine swap. From LS swaps to 1000hp 2JZs, this chassis’ seen it all. Well, it certainly has now.

Drift legend and former Formula Drift Champion Ryan Tuerck and his team have built the first Ferrari 458 engined Toyota GT86.

While the project isn’t yet finished, the car did manage to attend 2016’s SEMA show where it showed off its magnificent engine bay.

So how much does it cost to put something like this together? Well, in the video Ryan is hesitant to give any major numbers away, but he did give an idea of how much the engine alone cost. The engine was sourced by Huddy Motorsports on the second hand market with a price tag of $42,000 after haggling. It had 6000 miles on it, and judging from what Ryan was saying, it was pulled from a 458 that had been in a front end collision.

With the 458 being a mid-engined supercar, a front collision shouldn’t have any effect on the power-plant, but to squeeze it into a GT86 and get it running is no mean feat. Surely, thousands of dollars worth of fabrication and parts have been used to make Ryan’s dream become a reality, but boy are we glad he and his team went through with it – especially when it sounds like this…

Between practice sessions at Formula Drift Orlando, Ryan took his new four-wheeled baby onto the track – a brave decision, and one I wouldn’t take with walls that close!

As you can hear, this car screams like a banshee, producing about 550whp, and a torque number of 390 according to Ryan – that torque figure more than likely being ‘lb-ft’. With these figures, he says it revs ‘super strong’ from 6000rpm all the way to 9000rpm, limited at the moment however to 8500rpm.

This is surely one of the most interesting engine swaps I’ve seen. The amount of detail and workmanship that has gone into the build is incredible. Definitely beats the standard LS swap in my books… until you look at the price!

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
