It’s Here: A Hellcat Powered Mazda Miata MX5

LS swaps into the modest little Miata, or MX5 as we call it here over the pond, are more popular than Heinz tomato soup. YouTube videos of these potent little numbers no longer rack up views because by now, everyone and their dog sitter has seen it before. So where do we go from here? Since the excitement of a Chevvy big block in a small sports car has run out, what’s next? How about something from Dodge, namely, their Hellcat V8.

These pack 707hp into their 8 cylinders, meaning the certain MX5 that can be seen in these videos below will have more than 6 times the power. It’s quite a jump from the 116hp 1.8-litre, isn’t it?

However, life isn’t like Forza despite what a lot of younger folk think, as the 6.2-litre V8 is a large engine to fit into the tiny engine bay of an MX5. Therefore, it proved to be quite the challenge fitting it in for these YouTubers. And of course, the standard gearbox that runs all 116 horses to the rear wheels needs replacing with something that can handle the endless power and torque that this new engine creates. So enter Tremec from stage left to be slotted under the minute chassis.

Now, the engine certainly won’t be able to be hidden under the bonnet of the car, so this is certainly not going to be a sleeper. But I highly doubt the exhaust rumble could be well enough hidden to not perk up the ears of those who can pick out a V8 from a sea of four-cylinders. And even then, driving such a small and light car with so much horsepower is a death wish, so why wouldn’t you want to show off the fact that you’re cheating death by the mile?

Have a gander through the videos and let us know if you’d be brave enough to take on the Miata from Hell. I’d definitely give it a go, soon after making sure I’d seen my solicitor about a will. Just in case.
