Subaru Teases New 2022 WRX S4 STI In New Video

The next-generation WRX S4 has been confirmed by Subaru for Japan after a short teaser video was published to the Japanese company’s YouTube channel. While the current-generation WRX debuted in the United States earlier this month, the Japanese version has yet to be unveiled.

The JDM WRX S4, as seen in the film clip, is painted in the same bright orange paint color as its US-spec counterpart and features a comparable body kit with crossover-style wheel arch extensions, sporty bumpers, and a wingless tail. The only difference between the two is the S4 badge below the WRX logo, as well as the legendary red STI badge on both grille and tailgate.

The former might lead some people to believe it is the genuine WRX STI with its full suite of performance, but this isn’t the case. The WRX S4 is only available in the STI Sport trim in Japan, which while being at the top of the range, doesn’t reflect a full-bodied STI. But, based on previous generations, the STI Sport should include a variety of STI components and more accessories.

The engine bay contains a more powerful variant of the turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces 271 horsepower (202 kW / 275 PS) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque in the US specification model. Power is sent to all four wheels via either a 6-speed manual or a “Subaru Performance Transmission” CVT (go for the manual, please) and Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with Active Torque Vectoring, which are both available on this model.

According to Japanese reports, the model’s formal debut will be in late October, with the “Coming Soon” tag on the company’s video announcing its arrival. We’re very excited, and will be waiting with bated breath.
