The Koenigsegg Gemera Mega GT Produces 1,700 Hybrid Horsepower
Not only has Koenigsegg released the fastest car it’s ever going to build, the Absolut, but the Swedish company has just released its first four-seater Mega GT car. Bad news, it’s only got a 3-cylinder engine. Good news, it still manages to create develop 1,700bhp thanks to three electric motors. Inside is enough room to seat four adults, and there’s plenty of space for luggage. Koenigsegg says this car “outperforms most two-seat megacars, both combustion and electric.”
The 3-cylinder is a 2.0-litre unit with a dry sump and two turbochargers. The company calls this powerplant its “Tiny Friendly Giant”, An electric motor is mounted onto the engine’s crankshaft to power the front wheels, and the final two sit at each rear wheel for all-wheel-drive performance. Collectively, they produce 1,700bhp and 2,581lb-ft of torque. This combination can propel this family car to Rimac-levels of speeds – 0-62mph takes just 1.9 seconds. 249mph comes in “record-matching pace”, according to the company.
In any other car, this performance could be incredibly unnerving, but Koenigsegg has built in four-wheel steering, all-wheel torque vectoring, and a no doubt trick AWD system, plus the rigidity of the carbon fibre monocoque.
“Ultimate performance has belonged to the world of two-seaters with very limited luggage space – until now,” Christian von Koenigsegg, founder and CEO of Koenigsegg, explains. “The Gemera is a completely new category of car where extreme megacar meets spacious interior and ultimate environmental consciousness. We call it a Mega-GT.”
Using an 800-volt battery, the Gemera can propel itself under electric power only for 50km where it can also, impressively, hit speeds up to 300kmph.
The car features all the creature comforts one could want, including four cup holders that are all heated and cooled. Both the front and rear passengers have access to their own infotainment screens, and wireless phone chargers. The car also includes a host of tech including Apple CarPlay, Wi-Fi connection, a three-zone climate system, electric seats, a premium audio system with 11 speakers, and so much more, making it not only an incredibly fast car, but a friendly one, too.
300 examples will be built, and while there’s no word on price, they’ve probably all already been sold.
