This Turbo Pontiac GTO Throws Sparks While Brake Boosting

The streets of New Mexico were rammed full of street racers when 1320Video visited with their cameras. Taking part was a few Corvette Z06s with superchargers, built motors, and meth injection pushing some serious power. Others had twin turbos pushing 4-figure horsepower. At least one Mustang was also in the group, and the subject of today’s piece, a turbo Pontiac GTO.

The racing starts with some pulls on a four-lane highway from a rolling start. Unfortunately, a car not involved with the racing pulled from the far right lane to the left stopping the powerful cars in their tracks. With them now overtaken, they line up again, but to the right of one of the Corvettes, the GTO is making a screeching sound. Sparks are flying from its front brakes as they clamp down onto the spinning rotors.

The car is brake boosting. Here’s a definition:

Brake boosting is the process of applying the brakes while maintaining throttle to spool the turbo while also maintaining rolling speed. Once the brakes are released, the car can accelerate with more boost.

It’s a real spectacle, and well worthy of a watch.

We don’t condone illegal street racing of any sort. Please abide by the rules of the road and only race on certified tracks.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
