Two GM Engineers Arrested After Street Racing Pre-Pruduction C8 Corvettes
It looks as though the Chevrolet C8 Corvette might be just as irresistible as we expected after two GM employees have been arrested for allegedly street racing the new American supercar. A Kentucky state trooper reportedly caught them in a 2020 pre-production model racing down a city street in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
WNKY reports that the incident took place last week, January 8. There were a number of charges involved, including racing a motor vehicle on a public highway, reckless driving, and speeding 26mph or more over the speed limit, the latter meaning a court hearing will be needed and a possible loss of license for the drivers.
With a recorded speed of 120mph in a 45mph zone, according to the citation, the drivers of the two Corvettes could find themselves in serious trouble, especially as they were apparently also under the influence of alcohol, however charges for DUI were not made. A third Corvette was also at the scene, but didn’t take part in the street race. You can see where the race took place, thanks to Corvette Forum below.
The drivers behind the two speeding Corvettes were Alexander Thim, 27, a computer-aided engineer of induction and exhaust systems according to his Linkedin via Autoblog, and Mark Derkatz, 30.
The cars were impounded and retrieved the next day by representatives and GM also replied to Automobile on being asked about the situation.
“We are aware of an incident involving our test vehicles and are currently investigating. Safety remains our overriding priority at General Motors. We have no further comment at this time.”
We have a feeling the engineers aren’t going to get off lightly.
