VW Debuts Arteon Shooting Brake With A Striking Profile And Sensible Design

It’s been years since Volkswagen has made the V6 Passat R36, and if you ask us, the time for a sporty estate car has been long overdue. Enter the Arteon Shooting Brake.

The new version of the Arteon will likely be powered by the same 2.0L turbocharged engine seen in the Golf R, which gets over 300 horsepower. That engine should drive all four wheels, and combine with a DSG gearbox with paddle shifters. Word on the street has it that the Arteon will also be getting tuned by Volkswagen’s R division.

So this new Arteon variant will sit squarely in competition with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series. It will be appropriately zippy, especially stylish, as the Arteon represents a trimmed up Passat. The build quality should be on par with VW’s “T” cars, but more streamlined than its SUVs, obviously.

The VW Arteon Shooting Brake will essentially be a low-key alternative to the Porsche Panamera. With the Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake performing poorly when it comes to moving sales figures, perhaps a VW could attract the right kind of buyer for this kind of estate car.

Shooting brakes are no doubt a niche market, selling far less than your run-of-th-mill crossover segment. Still, sometimes all it takes is one particular model release to make a trend of certain designs. Maybe VW is on to something here.
