You Need To Drive These Roads Before You Die

Roads are more than just tarmac and white and yellow paint. They’re an escape for many of us, a way to flood our bodies with adrenaline and soak in beautiful vistas. So with this in mind, here is a list of roads you need to drive before you die.

Arthur’s Pass, New Zealand

Found in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, this mountain pass goes from coast-to-coast of South Island with extraordinary views and sweeping turns. It travels from Christchurch on the east coast to Greymouth on the west. The Otira Viaduct which you can see in the photo carries traffic over unstable ground, replacing the previous road which was prone to avalanches and closures.

Stelvio Pass, Alps, northern Italy

When an Alfa Romeo is named after a road, you know that road is going to be one hell of a drive. The Stelvio Pass has an elevation of 2,757 metres above sea level, making it the second highest pass in the Alps and sits close to the Swiss border. It consists of tight corners, cambers and long straights making it one of the best driving roads in the world. Just watch the cyclists.

Furka Pass, Switzerland

Back in the Alps yet again with a pass that was used for the filming of the James Bond film, Goldfinger. The road is perfectly surfaced thanks to the Swiss government, but be careful of the bind corners and hairpins. If you’re on the hunt for an adrenaline rush, this is the road for you.

Seven Mile Bridge, Florida, USA

This is another road that’s starred in a James Bond film, this time License to kill. It’s starred in other films too, such as 2Fast2Furious and Mission Impossible 3. It opened in 1912 and is one of the longest bridges in the world – I’ll let you guess how long it is. The road isn’t such an interesting one, but the views are immense, as will be the memory.

Dadès Gorges mountain pass, Morocco

There’s only one way to drive through Morocco’s Dadès Valley between the Atlas Mountains and the Anti-Atlas mountain range – via the Dadès Gorges mountain pass. It spans 100 miles from Ouarzazate and boasts an exciting barometer of snow on one side and desert on the other. And if you’ve got an off-roader, you could take the scenic route on the not-so-car-friendly path which heads north towards Agoudal before turning south towards Todra Gorge.

Tell us in the comments below which road you would add to the list!

Alex Harrington

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]

  1. I would add the blue ridge parkway, but the speed limit is so low, the only car you could drive to the limit with is a MG Midget.
