Maserati Reveals Teasers For New 6-Cylinder Mid-Engined Supercar
Maserati is stepping up to the mark and doing out work for us by releasing its very own spy shots of an all-new sports car, supposedly powered by an engine made by the company itself.
In the photos, you can see what looks to be a mid-engined sports car with large side vents being driven out of the Viale Menotti gates in Modena, Italy. At the moment it’s covered in black and white camouflage to hide its curvature and design, but the official reveal will come eventually during May next year.
Because of the long wait before the official reveal, Maserati isn’t keen on letting us see its hand, but with a poker face, it’s told us that it’s going to be producing its own engine in-house – not surprising after Ferrari announced earlier this month that its deal with Trident to supply engines will be terminated.
According to Maserati, the engine will be the “forefather of a new family of engines integrated exclusively on the vehicles of the brand.” So despite the FCA and PSA merger, we won’t be seeing any sharing of this engine under that umbrella.
The name of the new model is still majorly under wraps, but Motor1.com Italy is saying the engine will be a six-cylinder. Yes, not a lot to go on, but at least we can say with confirmation that Maserati will not be disappearing any time soon, despite ridding its lineup of the GrandTurismo and GranCabrio. What we can also say is that it looks awfully similar to a Gumpert or Alfa Romeo 4C, which has just been confirmed to be dead.
We can’t wait to hear more about this new Maserati, and let’s hope it’s part of a refresh strategy that will bring new life to a boring and unchanging portfolio of cars.
