New Morgan Plus Four Shares Only 3% Of Parts With Predecessor

After teasing us with the image of a car under a cover last week, Morgan has just revealed its new Plus Four. In fact, it’s almost entirely new, with only 3% of its components being carried over from the previous model. A name change from Plus 4 to Plus Four also has us thinking this is a new era for the British marque.

Under the hand-built bodywork sits its aluminium chassis, and beneath the bonnet is the first four-cylinder turbo engine ever used by the brand. It’s a 2.0-litre BMW unit good for 255bhp and 295lb ft of torque. This enables the sports car to hit 62mph in the same amount of time as the previous Roadster – 4.8 seconds. Its top speed is 149mph.

The ECU has been remapped for greater throttle response and optimum driveability, and this can be sharpened even further via a button in the centre of the interior which enables the Sport Plus mode. This changes the map further and releases “a whole new dynamic character from the car.” On paper, it’s very similar to the previous Morgan Roadster, but its balance and dynamics are far improved.

The engine can be partnered with two gearbox options: a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic, and Morgan assures us that the car will be able to achieve a combined 40mpg.

With the Geneva Motor Show cancelled due to the Coronavirus, the British marque is planning their own event to show off their new four-cylinder Plus Four at their own factory in Malvern, UK.

The price of the car starts at £62,995 and is available right now. After Richard Hammond’s reaction to his new Plus Six, I can’t say I’m not tempted.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
