New Subaru WRX STI Will Get 400HP From 2.4-Litre Turbo Engine

New reports are flooding in about the next Subaru WRX STI, with rumours speculating that it will be powered by a 2.4-litre turbocharged boxer engine.

The engine, currently found in the Subaru Ascent, Legacy, and Outback, currently produces a mild 260 hp and 277 lb-ft lb-ft of torque. In this new STI, it’s likely to make around 400 hp and 361 lb-ft. Interestingly, this is the same engines that’s been touted for the new GR86 and Subaru BRZ, so we can only guess as to what power it will be producing in those models.

This increase in power over the current output of the engine hints at a host of new internals that can take the increase in power and boost. Unfortunately, details on the gearbox are sparse, but it’s likely that the power will be taken to each of the four wheels like every other STI before it.

With Subaru engineers looking at the Mercedes-AMG’s M139 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine as a benchmark, an engine that produces 416 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque in its highest performance spec, it’s likely the Subaru engine will mirror this.

Styling will come from the Viviz Performance Concept from 2017, with its lines being sharper and a more coupe-like than before, plus a more aggressive front end and wider arches. It’s also likely to run on Toyota architecture.

The WRX is looking to be released later this year, with the STI following the year after.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
