Subaru Teases 4WD Evoltis With All-Electric 280hp Powertrain

Subaru recently showed off a very cool EV, called the Evoltis, which will go into production in 2021 with 280 horsepower, four-wheel drive, and a battery pack with 310 miles of range. These specs would put it right in competition with the Tesla Model Y, and other upcoming electric SUVs.

The wild-looking design will be Subaru’s first all-electric vehicle, fitting squarely in the Crosstrek’s position of their midsize SUV lineup. Coming from a design alliance with Toyota, the Evoltis looks to emulate similar developments such as the Subaru Hybrid Crosstrek, which utilizes Toyota’s Prius technology.

The Evoltis design features some interesting styling, very much in keeping with Toyota’s aggressive lines on the front end. On the sides, the large black sections create an optical illusion, where the car looks much smaller, with larger wheel wells, than it actually does. While these decisions could be polarizing, they are a step towards Toyota’s bodywork direction for Subaru.

That all being said, Subaru is likely to reveal an even more developed version of this design later next year. The official unveil of the Evoltis is rumored for October, at the Tokyo Auto Show. This model will mark an important trend for the company, which has said it plans for 40% of its sales to be “electrified” by 2030.
