F1 Fans Show Sadness At Schumacher Name Potentially Leaving The Sport
Mick Schumacher’s future in F1 is looking to be on rocky ground as his relationship with Ferrari comes to its “natural end” towards the end of this year.
This doesn’t come as much of a surprise as the Haas driver has failed to show real performance so far this F1 season. In fact, two large shunts from the German has been extremely costly to the team, especially with the new cost cap introduced this year. So, with the 23-year old’s future with Haas looking to be wrapped up, fans are questioning where he’ll be going for 2023.
Alpine or Williams Racing could take on the driver, but if they fill their seats with other potentially more capable drivers, Schumacher may have to leave F1 for another racing series.
Esteban Ocon, Alpine’s driver alongside Fernando Alonso, is hoping Schumacher will make the move alongside him, and while it’s rumoured that there are talks between the team and driver, nothing has been confirmed yet. On that note, it should also be noted that Haas hasn’t shown Schumacher the door, but it’s all but confirmed that he won’t be continuing with the American-owned team.
Antonio Giovinazzi is looking to replace him as Haas and will be testing the car for two FP1 sessions later this season. Hopefully we’ll know more by then.
This is looking to be an interesting chapter in the sport, but more sad than anything as it threatens to remove the legendary Schumacher name from F1. His father, Michael Schumacher, won 7 world titles equalling Lewis Hamilton’s victories, and while Mick hasn’t quite shown such confidence, it would be a sad moment to lose the sport’s only remaining German driver.
Along Mick’s career, his relationship with Ferrari has been questioned by many, wondering if it was simply his surname that has allowed him into the Prancing Horse fold, but Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto says otherwise:
“For someone like me who has known him from birth, there’s no doubt that welcoming Mick into Ferrari has a special emotional meaning, but we have chosen him for his talent and the human and professional qualities that have already distinguished him despite his young age,” Binotto said.
