F1: Lewis Hamilton To Start At Back Of Grid At Italian GP Due To Engine Penalty

7-time world champion Lewis Hamilton will be starting at the back of the grid in this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix as Mercedes takes an engine penalty. This will be their fourth of the season, one more than is permitted in the rules of F1.

The engine received damage during the shunt with Alpine driver Fernando Alonso, with the impact being recorded at 45Gs. Mercedes is still hoping to bring the engine back to life with a “recovery plan”, however.

It’s unknown as to what’s been swapped out on this engine, but the penalty does mean that Hamilton will be starting at the back of the grid, and despite the Brit looking feeling optimistic about taking his first win of the season soon, the high-speed circuit of Monza likely won’t be the place it happens.

Hamilton’s performance has been great over the last few races with him taking a number of podium finishes before the Summer break, but bad luck struck him as a badly timed Virtual Safety Car ruined his chances of a win during the Dutch GP.

Alongside him, Valterri Bottas is taking an engine penalty with Alfa Romeo, and Mick Schumacher of Haas will also be joining them.

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
