F1 News: Alpine lash out against “ridiculous” Alonso penalty

Alpine F1 Team has launched a protest against the penalty given post-race to Fernando Alonso at the American GP, with the Spaniard losing a crucial P7 finish for the French squad.

Alonso recovered from a terrible crash to climb his way up the field and execute a fantastic race, delivering very high levels of performance throughout his final stint on the hard tyres.

The French team is unhappy with the penalty awarded to the Spaniard, arguing that the FIA did deem the car as being legal during the race and also in post-race inspections.

Otmar Szafnauer, as quoted by Adam Cooper, gave his response to the decision:

“I think it’s ridiculous. I mean, it’s obvious accident damage. And the cars are allowed to finish with accident damage, it happens all the time.

“Not having a mirror is a lot different than not having a front wing that works.”
