F1 News: Drivers Take A Stand Against Team Bosses After Saudi Arabia Terror Attack

The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix is reportedly still set to go ahead even after a four hour drivers’ meeting took place this evening.

The missile attack on the nearby refinery during the FP1 has created a huge amount of doubt as to whether this weekends Grand Prix should go ahead.

Plumes of smoke could be seen from the track and you could see flames once it got dark.

F1 bosses delayed the start of FP2 due to an emergency meeting but decided that the practice would still continue as well as the full Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff commented on the situation:

“It was a good meeting. The drivers are going to talk now in the drivers’ meeting.”

“We, all the team principals, have been assured we are protected here. That’s probably the safest place you can be in Saudi Arabia at the moment and that’s why we are racing.”

When asked if there had been unanimity, Wolff responded:

“Between the team principals, yes.”

The drivers then met for a meeting regarding this which lasted a little over four hours. F1 CEO, Stefano Domenicali, also joined the meeting part way through, followed by F1 Managing Director, Ross Brawn.

As the meeting got to past midnight, Brawn and Domenicali left the drivers to continue. Going on for a further hour and clearly not coming to an agreement, the team principals re-joined the meeting even after previously deciding the race would go ahead.

At 2am local time, the team principals went to Race Control and the drivers stayed. It became obvious that the drivers did not agree with the team bosses and all as a group were not happy about continuing with the race.

The meeting finished after over four hours. Red Bull team principal, Christian Horner, still seemed confident the race would be going ahead as well as McLaren’s Zak Brown.
