F1 News: Fred Vasseur Leaves Sauber To Join Ferrari As Team Principal

On December 13, 2022, it was announced that Fred Vasseur has been appointed as the new team principal of the Ferrari F1 team. Vasseur, who has extensive experience in the world of motorsports, will take over the role immediately and will be tasked with overseeing the team’s operations and helping to guide them back to success on the track.

Vasseur’s appointment comes at a crucial time for Ferrari, as the team has struggled in recent years to match the performance of its rivals. In the 2021 season, Ferrari finished a distant sixth in the constructors’ championship, well behind teams like Mercedes and Red Bull Racing, and while 2022 saw promise for the Maranello team, poor strategy and reliability issues tore the championship away from the likes of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.

Vasseur brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as the team principal of the Sauber and Renault teams in Formula One. He has also worked in other forms of motorsports, including as the CEO of the ART Grand Prix team in the GP2 Series.

In his new role, Vasseur will be tasked with overseeing the development of Ferrari’s 2023 car alongside the team’s drivers and engineers to rectify 2022’s poor reliability as well as working to improve on the poor strategy decisions made last season.

Vasseur also expressed excitement about joining Ferrari and the challenge of returning the team to the top of Formula One:

“I am truly delighted and honoured to take over the leadership of Scuderia Ferrari as Team Principal.

“As someone who has always held a lifelong passion for motorsport, Ferrari has always represented the very pinnacle of the racing world to me. I look forward to working with the talented and truly passionate team in Maranello to honour the history and heritage of the Scuderia and deliver for our Tifosi around the world”

Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna also added:

“We are delighted to welcome Fred Vasseur to Ferrari as our Team Principal. Throughout his career he has successfully combined his technical strengths as a trained engineer with a consistent ability to bring out the best in his drivers and teams.

“This approach and his leadership are what we need to push Ferrari forward with renewed energy.”

It remains to be seen how Vasseur will fare in his new role, but his appointment is a clear sign that Ferrari is committed to making changes in order to return to the top of the sport. With Vasseur at the helm, the team will be looking to bounce back and challenge for victories in the coming seasons.
