F1 News: George Russell Takes First Mercedes Victory At Brazilian Grand Prix

The Brazilian Grand Prix hosted the final sprint race of the season today and Mercedes driver, George Russell, took his first victory.

Kevin Magnussen started in pole position in the Haas for the sprint race after an exciting end to the qualifying session yesterday, and after a fantastic start was not able to hold off the Red Bull’s, Mercedes’, and Ferrari’s for too long but still ended up in a great eighth place for the Grand Prix tomorrow.

Max Verstappen started in second and was one of the only driver’s to start on medium tyres, as well as Williams driver Nicholas Latifi, and after overtaking Kevin Magnussen and then battling to defend the front spot from Russell, the Mercedes driver took first place after three overtaking attempts.

In Russell’s post race interview he gave Mercedes fans hope for a better 2023 season with things starting to look up for the team. He explained:

“Obviously, this is a sprint race, and you’ve got to manage that risk-reward. So even though I was dying to get that victory, I didn’t want to risk it too much and end up in with no points and starting at the back.

“But we made it stick, third time lucky. I wasn’t expecting to have that much pace, but I think it goes to show all the hard work everybody’s putting in and the progress we as a team have made. These last three races since Austin, the car has been feeling really great. Obviously difficult to know how Max would have got on had he been on the soft tyres. But nevertheless, standing here is a great feeling. But we’re in a luxury position that we can maybe split the strategy and go for the win,”

It is set to be an exciting Grand Prix race in Brazil tomorrow with a mix-up of the usual front row and many of the cars suffering from tyre degradation.
