F1 News: Jackie Stewart On Lewis Hamilton – “It’s Time For Him To Resign”

F1 legend, Jackie Stewart, has said that seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, should retire from F1.

It’s no secret that it has been a troublesome start to the 2022 F1 season for the Mercedes team with many issues with their new cars, especially the porpoising and immense force the drivers are being put under. We even saw Hamilton struggling to get out of his car at the end of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix due to back pain.

Hamilton finished ahead of his new teammate, George Russell, at the Canadian Grand Prix last weekend, bagging himself a spot on the podium in third place which was his second podium finish of the season. Russell has been branded as ‘Mr Consistency’ and seems to be coping better with the cars issues, although it is worth noting that the two cars have different set-ups. Russell has managed to finish in the top five for every race this season and has had four podium finishes. The fact that Hamilton seems to be struggling to keep up with Russell is leading many to think it might be his time to retire.

Three-time world champion, Jackie Stewart, recently appeared on the Convex Conversation Podcast where he was quizzed on what he thought about Hamilton’s current performance in the championship. Stewart said:

‘It’s time for him to resign.”

Stewart went on to explain that Hamilton has plenty of other ventures that he can continue to be successful with. He went on to say:

He’s now struggling a little bit because he’s had a new teammate who’s been quicker than him in qualifying so far, which is gonna be difficult for him to handle,”

Hamilton is in contract with Mercedes until the end of 2023 so it will be interesting to see what happens. Many fans would hate to see him retire when he is not finishing on a high point, especially when the issues do not seem to be down to him as a driver.
