F1 News: Martin Brundle Admits He Hates The Gridwalk Interviews – “You Have No Idea How Much I Dislike Doing Them

The Miami Grand Prix was packed to the brim with celebrities. DJ Kaled was seen walking the grid, as was David Beckham and Tom Brady. But for die hard F1 fans, the biggest name in front of the camera was of course Martin Brundle.

Beginning his career as an F1 driver but eventually becoming one of the most well known and respected commentators in the sport, Brundle is known for his legendary gridwalks as he attempts to get something juicy from the many celebrities who are walking up and down with the cameras. It wasn’t long ago Brundle embarrassed a rapper, Megan Thee Stallion, as he tried to talk to her but was pushed away by her entourage – later likened to Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter films.

This time, on trying to get something interesting for the camera, Brundle walked over to who he thought was Patrick Mahomes. It turned out to be Paolo Banchero, a basketball player, and the resulting video was brilliant.

“What is your name, sir?” Brundle asks the player, clearly confused as to who he is.

Check out the video with Megan Thee Stallion below. It’s very, very funny, and pushed Brundle to change his Twitter bio to, “I can, because I did.” If you’re yet to see the video, you’ll understand why this is so funny once you watch it.

Brundle has now revealed that he hates doing the grid walk, and hasn’t watched any of his work on the grid since starting it. He posted the following to Twitter:

There’s a reason why I’ve never watched back an F1 gridwalk in a quarter of a century of doing them,” he wrote.

“You have no idea how much I dislike doing them but somehow those crazy moments have defined my professional career. Oh well, that’s the way it is.”

Fans of the commentator were quick to respond with one writing:

“When you have caught a driver / ex-driver / engineer / team manager / official etc then it’s very much appreciated by all of us longtime, true F1 fans.

But when you’ve had to talk to lots of Bus Jumping “Celebs” / Social Media “Influencers” WTF? then that’s understandable.”

A second added:

“Hey Martin, Some of those turkeys you interviewed had no idea, so full of themselves, have a god complex, I honestly like the grid walk, you do a good job for what it is, its a rush to talk to as many people you know in the Game.

“Think people need an information booklet curated about Grid Reporters and Media needs a booklet about big names on the grid walk, would be way better way to get better interviews potentially!”

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
