F1 News: Mercedes Boss Takes Aim At Red Bull Sporting Director Over Abu Dhabi Controversy

Mercedes-AMG team principal Toto Wolff has launched yet more attacks at 2021’s race director Michael Masi and his relationship with Red Bull.

During a new documentary coming to Sky Sports called Duel: Hamilton V Verstappen, Wolff brought into question Red Bull’s sporting director Jonathan Wheatley who had formed a “bromance” with Masi. According to Wolff, this influenced Masi’s decision to allow the lapped cars between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen to move out of Verstappen’s way during the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

He said the following:

“He’s [Wheatley] turned Michael Masi the race director, not only in Abu Dhabi but before, and probably Max owes him a lot.”

Wolff also added how he felt about Masi as he leaves his role as race director:

“I haven’t spoken to him and I don’t want to speak to him ever again.

“His decisions were wrong and I’m sure that he regrets them

“The FIA should have seen much earlier that there was a problem. There was a problem with the structure. There was a problem of personalities.”

Despite the drama between his team and Red Bull, Wolff is keen to add that he feels sorry for Verstappen as the focus has been taken away from his world champion win, with it instead being set on the drama of Abu Dhabi:

“I feel for Max.

“He merits the World Championship, but there’s only talk about Abu Dhabi.”

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: [email protected]
