Fernando Alonso Hit By Car While Cycling And Is Now Out Of Surgery

Two-time Formula 1 Champion Fernando Alonso has been hit by a car on his bike while cycling in Switzerland. Set to return to Formula 1 this coming season, his team Alpine has confirmed that he is conscious.

Cyling on the outskirts of Lugano on Thursday, he fractured his upper jaw during the hit and has now had surgery to correct this. He will be in hospital for the next couple of days before he’s expected to be resuming training and preparation for the upcoming Formula 1 season and its first race, Bahrain next month.

“Following his cycling accident yesterday Fernando Alonso was kept under observation in hospital in Switzerland,” the statement from Alpine states.

“Medics discovered a fracture in his upper jaw and conducted a successful corrective operation. The attending medical team are satisfied with his progress.

“Fernando will remain under observation in hospital for a further 48 hours.

“Looking forward, after a few days of complete rest, he will be able to progressively resume training. We expect him be fully operational to undertake preparation for the season.”

As far as reports are saying, Alonso came off his bike under heavy braking to avoid an oncoming car, he’s still set to make the grid on March 12 this year.

Alonso has been out of F1 for two seasons, in which he raced twice for Toyota at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, winning the series. He also won the World Endurance Championship title, and has competed in the Indianapolis 500 and the Dakar Rally.

He now returns to the Renault F1 team, which has now been rebranded as Alpine for the 2021 F1 series.
