F1 News: Mattia Binotto says FIA “not ready for these situations” after Italian GP

The Italian GP was a fairly unremarkable race for Ferrari, who lacked the pace to challenge a dominant Max Verstappen for victory on their home turf.

Charles Leclerc’s advantage from Pole Position was not enough to prevent the charging Verstappen from climbing up the field and taking control of the race.

However, a late safety car (after Daniel Ricciardo’s retirement) presented some hope that Ferrari could fight for the win. Unfortunately for the Scuderia, this hope quickly vanished as the race ended under safety car conditions.

Mattia Binotto was unimpressed with the conclusion of the race, telling Sky Italia that the FIA was too slow in taking action:

“We don’t know how it would have ended, but it’s a shame. There were conditions to start the race a little earlier. There was no reason to wait.

“Today, the FIA was caught sleeping; maybe they are not ready to deal with these situations.

“Today, Max was very strong. When the safety car came out, we had more degradation, and I think it would have been difficult to take him back…

“Carlos also had a splendid race, and I think he could have tried to catch Russell and get on the podium. But it was a nice weekend, and I want to thank our fantastic fans.”
