Jeremy Clarkson On Why The Grand Tour Is A Success Despite It Failing
The Grand Tour is one of the greatest ‘reality’ shows on Amazon Prime Video, if not the greatest. While viewers may question whether the show is scripted, the hosts have reported again and again that it is in fact not, but in a recent interview, presenter Jeremy Clarkson reveals why it’s not so difficult for these unscripted episodes to be a success, but why he wants the farming to show be a different animal.
“We’ve set ourselves up after many years of working together, where everyone expects, and hopes, we’ll fail.
“So we can actually stand there and go, ‘we’ve failed!’, which means you don’t have to be good at anything or try very hard.
“You just think, well if we’ve got to get the car across this river and it sinks, that’s great television and the viewer will go ‘look, they’ve sunk that car in that river’, it’s perfect!
“So we actually celebrate failure.”
He continues, explaining how when anyone who ever tries to do DIY, “it always ends in disaster”. He says the same about cooking, and because of this, the public are used to failing themselves.
“And when they turn their television on and see three people on television who also fails, because every other program they don’t fail.
“they don’t go over to someone and say, ‘right, we’re going over now to Parliament Square’ and the reporter goes ‘oh I don’t know I haven’t seen anything I’ve only just got here. The bus was late’, everything always works on television.
“The Grand Tour, and before Top Gear, was an opportunity for people failing, and that’s why I wanted the farming show to be different.”
He adds: “Well, it is failing, but not because I haven’t tried my hardest.”
